Lightfastness | How long will it resist fading?

  • Each pigment is rated on scale by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). Liquitex paints are all rated ASTM I (excellent) or II (very good) and considered permanent and lightfast for 50-100+ years in gallery conditions. Our metallic and fluorescent colors are naturally less lightfast.

Opacity/Transparency | We communicate opacity/transparency clearly on our packaging based on three categories:

  • Opaque: these colors do not allow light to pass through the color layer and offer the best coverage or hiding power.
  • Semi-opaque: these allow for some light to pass through the color layer and sit between opaque and transparent colors
  • Transparent: these colors offer the least coverage and allow light to pass through the color layer to the surface below.
  • Series:
Pigments come from a variety of sources and have different prices according to their rarity, processing and milling costs. We group our colors into a 'series' pricing structure according to how much each one takes to make. Series 1 colors contain the most inexpensive pigments, while Series 4 and 5 color contain the most expensive pigments.

MEET LIQUTEX SPRAY PAINT

A NEW WAY TO CREATE.

This is spray paint but not as you know it. It's come into the studio and designed for fine artists.

Liquitex Spray Paint is a fine art tool made with highly lightfast artist-quality pigments. Unlike regular sprays, it uses low-odor professional paint made with water-based technology and low solvents.

No fumes. An easy-clean, water-based formulation. Fine dispersion, intense color and UV permanence. Layer it with painted surfaces, use on 3D, the possibilities are infinite. Try it see where a new color format can take you.

LOW ODOR

We’ve made our spray paint a lot more pleasant and safe to use when working both outside and in. Unlike solvent-heavy sprays, this solvent-light formula gives far less fumes.

WATER-BASED

Water-soluble when wet, yet permanent and water-resistant when dry. You get the best of both worlds. Once sprayed, all the water in the paint evaporates quickly, leaving a flexible acrylic film of color behind. The color is permanent and doesn’t move - which means you can over-paint without bleeding and achieve multi-layered surface effects.

CARE

Fine art tools need looking after and our Spray Paint is no exception. Here’s a few tips:

  • Always start with a clean cap – If it’s dirty, replace it with a fresh one
  • Shake the can for a minute before you start to keep the pigment/binder evenly mixed
  • Keep it upright as you spray
  • Apply in short, frequent bursts
  • After use, spray upside down until nothing comes out, then remove the cap and give it a quick clean (before paint dries) with soap and water or Cap Cleaner
  • Keep the cap cover on when not in use, to stop paint from drying out
VERSATILITY

Low solvents means it’s safe for more substrates and techniques. So you can use Spray Paint where and how you like, on a wider range of materials, including styrofoam. . Each 12oz can covers 21sqft/2sqm and the spray nozzle ensures color gets into every nook. Use it on stretched canvas, card, board, glass, wood, masonry, brick, ceramics and styrofoam.

PRE-MIXED SYSTEM

Most artists use our Spray Paint directly on their surfaces, without mixing. So to help you get consistent tints and shades, we’ve pre-mixed some colors by adding black and white pigments to create a complete tonal range. If the color name includes a number, you know it’s had a monochrome pigment added - here’s a guide:

  • Cobalt Blue Hue - our regular Liquitex Cobalt Blue Hue color
  • Cobalt Blue Hues 1–4 - these have had black pigment added to Cobalt Blue, to create a deeper shade
  • Cobalt Blue Hues 5–8 - these have had white pigment added to Cobalt Blue, to achieve a paler tint
ARCHIVAL

You can rely on the highest quality color-intense artist pigments when you use Spray Paint. Our pigments are processed using the latest basket bead-mill technology, where tiny reinforced ceramic beads give fine dispersion, great color development, strength and brightness. You get true color purity and archival stability in a spray.
