Lightfastness | How long will it resist fading?

  • Each pigment is rated on scale by the American Society for Testing & Materials (ASTM). Liquitex paints are all rated ASTM I (excellent) or II (very good) and considered permanent and lightfast for 50-100+ years in gallery conditions. Our metallic and fluorescent colors are naturally less lightfast.

Opacity/Transparency | We communicate opacity/transparency clearly on our packaging based on three categories:

  • Opaque: these colors do not allow light to pass through the color layer and offer the best coverage or hiding power.
  • Semi-opaque: these allow for some light to pass through the color layer and sit between opaque and transparent colors
  • Transparent: these colors offer the least coverage and allow light to pass through the color layer to the surface below.
  • Series:
Pigments come from a variety of sources and have different prices according to their rarity, processing and milling costs. We group our colors into a 'series' pricing structure according to how much each one takes to make. Series 1 colors contain the most inexpensive pigments, while Series 4 and 5 color contain the most expensive pigments.

MEET LIQUTEX BASICS ACRYLIC COLOR

THE EVERYDAY ACRYLIC

Whether you’re a beginner on a budget, an experienced artist doing underpainting or sketching, or a creative professional doing color scoping and exploration, Liquitex Basics Acrylic has you covered.

Formulated with the same lightfast, fine art pigments used in our professional range (just with a lighter pigment load), Basics Acrylic delivers a lightfast, medium viscosity experience that sacrifices nothing. It’s the perfect balance of quality, versatility, and economy.

So, what are you waiting for? Jump straight in, go for it, and see what happens. Experience The Everyday Acrylic.

Basics gives you the perfect balance of quality and economy. Made for all artists, Basics acrylics are formulated with the exacting Liquitex standard. Which means they're made with the same lightfast, fine art pigments we use in our professional range, but just a lighter load.

Push your budget harder with Basics. Use on their own or combine together with professional materials – if they’re made by Liquitex, they’re all intermixable. Perfect for everyday use, for sketching out preliminary ideas, for underpainting before laying down your final paint application and for covering large areas.

If your paint sticks to it, you can use it. Use Basics on:

  • canvas
  • paper & board
  • wood & masonry
  • metal
  • styrofoam
  • stone & ceramics
  • textiles

Your work has a life beyond you. As with all Liquitex paints, the pigments in Basics acrylic have passed extensive tests for lightfastness. The advanced acrylic formula is highly flexible, durable, non-yellowing and UV-resistant. Your work will have the greatest archival permanence possible, withstanding color shifting or fading to stay vibrant and true.

Basics acrylics are safe for you to use. All colors are independently tested by the Art and Creative Materials Institute at Duke University, and hold the Approved Product (AP) safety seal. This means they are certified to contain no materials in sufficient quantities to be toxic or harmful to humans or to cause health problems, making them ideal for studio and educational use.

All Liquitex paints use the highest quality pigments and go through the same rigorous manufacturing process. The only difference is that with Basics we use a lower concentration of pigment than our professional paints. For Basics, fine art pigments are selected and milled using the latest basket bead-mill technology, in the same way as Soft and Heavy Body Acrylics. Pigments are ground with tiny reinforced ceramic beads to give fine dispersion, great color development, strength and brightness, before being added to the acrylic emulsion.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Other creatives have asked us...

WHAT ARE THE ‘WHAT WOULD YOU CREATE?’ SETS?

Nine curated sets. A lot of ways to make something unexpected. Each set brings together Liquitex colors, mediums and, in selected sets, tools and surfaces to help you explore trending palettes, try new techniques and follow your ideas wherever they go.

WHO ARE THE SETS FOR?

Anyone with an idea. Or half an idea. Or no idea yet. The collection is designed for curious beginners, experienced artists and every kind of creator in between.

WHAT’S INCLUDED IN EACH SET?

It depends on where you want your creativity to take you. Some sets focus on curated color palettes, while others bring together paints, mediums, tools and surfaces for techniques like 3D painting, fabric painting, fabric staining and mixed media. Check the individual set details for the full lineup.

DO I NEED EXPERIENCE TO USE THESE SETS?

Nope. The sets are made for experimentation, whether you’re trying acrylics for the first time, testing a new technique or pushing your practice somewhere different. Start with an idea. Change it halfway through. We’re not keeping score.

CAN I MIX THE PRODUCTS IN MY SET WITH OTHER LIQUITEX PRODUCTS?

Yes. Liquitex acrylic colors, mediums and tools are designed to give you the freedom to experiment across formats. Mix, layer and combine them to see where things go.

WHY DOES MY SET INCLUDE A DIFFERENT BRUSH FROM THE ONE SHOWN OR LISTED?

Some sets may feature a Liquitex Basics Shader Brush instead of the listed Liquitex Basics Bright #6 Brush. Same creative potential, slightly different tool in your hand. Set contents may vary, so check your pack to see what’s inside.

CAN I USE THE SETS FOR TECHNIQUES BEYOND THE ONES SHOWN?

Absolutely. The project ideas and techniques are starting points, not instructions from the creativity police. Use the products to explore your own combinations, surfaces and ways of working, following individual product guidance where needed.

WHERE CAN I FIND TUTORIALS AND INSPIRATION?

Right here on Liquitex.com and across Liquitex social channels. Look out for technique tutorials, quick how-to’s and project inspiration designed to help you get started. Then take it somewhere we didn’t expect.
